LAS
VEGAS (Thursday, January 18, 2001) - Las Vegas Outlaws Head
Coach Jim Criner added veteran QB Mike Buck to the Las Vegas
Outlaws roster today, with the former Miami Dolphins, New Orleans
Saints and Arizona Cardinals QB bringing additional depth and
experience to the Outlaws offense. In order to make room on
the team's 62-man roster, the Outlaws waived QB Lionel Hayes,
a 23-year old from Grambling who was added during the team's
November mini-camp.
"I'm
excited to have a veteran like Mike join us and compete at the
quarterback position," said Criner. "He has experience
and knowledge of the position and of the pro game that you can't
buy. He brings valuable tools to our squad, regardless of where
he ends up on the depth chart."
The
6-3, 230-lb. Maine product has spent recent seasons as the offensive
coordinator of the Pensacola Barracudas of the AF2 league, but
as Outlaws Offensive Coordinator Vince Alcalde says, "He
was stepping behind center himself to instruct, and realized
that the playing bug was still there."
Buck
was a four-year starter at Maine, establishing 27 school passing
records, including completions, attempts, touchdowns and yardage.
The Brooklyn-born QB was drafted in the sixth-round by the New
Orleans Saints, playing in eight games over the next four seasons
before being released in 1994. After sitting out that season,
he played with the Arizona Cardinals in 1995 and went to the
Miami Dolphins' camp in 1996.
With
just five days remaining until Monday's roster cutdown date,
the Outlaws coaching staff will utilize two more practice sessions
and Saturday's closed-door scrimmage against the Los Angeles
Xtreme to decide which seven players will be released on Monday.
Las Vegas will reach the final 45-man roster (38 active/7 practice
squad) on January 28.
